3 Steps to Natural Skincare

Katsiaryna Ortega

July 14, 2019

With large beauty brands like Sephora and Neutrogena introducing lines of natural skincare, you have probably noticed the rise of the natural skincare movement. Amidst many brands switching to naturally sourced ingredients and new brands popping up with a focus on clean, organic products, you may be wondering what this whole new wave of skincare means for your own beauty regimen. Do I need to throw out everything I have? Which brands are actually good for my skin? Here at Gift and Box we found ourselves asking the same questions about what the right thing to do is with so many brands claiming their natural skincare products are superior to the rest. What we found that the first step, and most important step, is to be more conscious of the products you buy. Below we outline the three most important things to keep in mind if you want to use natural products but don’t know where to begin.

**Scroll down or click here for this weeks featured natural skincare items we have in store that your skin will love you for.

1. Know what you are looking for

“Natural skincare” is a term that describes products that are naturally derived. Plant oils, natural vitamins, plant extracts, and food ingredients are the main things that natural skincare products are composed of. Natural skincare products harness the regenerative properties of plant-based ingredients that have proven to be healthy and safe on our skin. Thus, using a plant-based product that naturally heals and supports healthy and moisturized skin is the goal. Nature has a lot to offer when it comes to boosting our skins long term elasticity and health. The micronutrients found in plant oils, for example, are the purist way to nourish our skin. Switching to natural products means you are eliminating the question of whether the ingredients are going to have negative long-term impacts. Instead, you can trust that the natural and scientifically proven plant ingredients will be safe on your skin for years to come.

2. Look at the labels and start small

Being conscious about what your put on your face, body, and in your hair starts with questioning what is in the products you already use. Start small and look at the ingredients of the products you use daily. Some of your everyday products may be completely healthy. Therefore, it’s worth picking out the items that have harmful ingredients and subbing natural products in. This process doesn’t have the break the bank and remember that changes in your skincare regimen take time for your skin to adjust to. Also, you don’t have to settle for less when it comes to natural beauty products like mascara and blush. There are many brands that you know and love introducing improved natural formulas!

3. Know what to watch out for

While there are hundreds of synthetic ingredients that are harmful to our skin and overall health, there are a few main contenders that top the list. Below are the main ingredients to watch out for when buying skincare products.

- Parabens (preservative)

Other names: Methyparaben, Ethylparaben, Butylparaben, Benzylparaben, Propylparaben

- Petrolatum (Skin barrier and skin softener)

- Phthalates (product strengthener)

- Aluminum (sweat controller)

- Any synthetic Fragrances

When you step into Gift and Box Nantucket shop, you step into an atmosphere of calmness and wellbeing. Our secret is simple. Essential oils.

Essential oils are the extracted oils from plants and plants parts. They have been used for thousands of years as remedies, skin therapies, aromatherapies. More and more people nowadays use essential oils to make their own natural cleaning products. You will definitely see more posts with recipes here on this, but today the focus is on the list of our favorite essential oils. If you are just starting to learn about essential oils, we want to warn you, they are addictive. The second you experience the benefits, you won’t stop using them.

Lemon is famous for its antiseptic, disinfectant, calming, detoxifying, sleep-inducing properties. It helps to treat stress disorders, infections, skin disorders, insomnia, and fatigue. Besides, lemon oil is widely used as a common ingredient for household cleaning supplies. Lemon oil can also be used to clean clothing.

Lavender is probably the most common essential oil. It’s our customers’ absolute favorite in the store. Besides the fact that lavender can help treat cuts and wounds, it also helps with sleep, head and neck tension, stomach issues and motion sickness.

Eucalyptus is great for muscle relaxation and beneficial to those who suffer from bronchitis, sinusitis, congestion and asthma. It’s used in vapor medicines and warming or cooling rubs.

Tea tree oil is famous for its health benefits, and these benefits can be attributed to its properties as an antibacterial, antiseptic, antiviral, fungicide, and stimulant substance.
